Hofkirche Innsbruck
The Court church is amidst the most important architectural works of the city, and its construction was ordered by Emperor Maximilian, who conceived it as a monumental tomb for himself, although he was never buried there. In the Emperor’s mind, the church was supposed to symbolize the greatness of the German Empire: 40 statues representing the Emperor's ancestors, 100 statues of saints and 34 busts of ancient emperors were commissioned to Albrecht Durer and Peter Vischer. The project was only partly accomplished. Of the original 40 statues, only 28 were completed, just like the 100 statues (only 23 ) and the busts (22 out of 34). To the same complex of the Hofkirche belongs the famous Silver Chapel, which was ordered by the Archduke Ferdinand II for his wife Philippine Welser, who is known for her famous recipe book, the most ancient book of Tyrolean recipes. In the church is also buried Andreas Hofer, the hero of Tyrol’s independence.
